چکیده

Winnicott ( 1953) was the first investigator in the Western literature who paid due attention to the rather common phenomenon of a “security” blanket. In his report he introduced the term “transitional object” and described it as the first not-me possession of a child which plays an important role in ego development. Since then, many reports on this topic have appeared, mainly in the psychoanalytic literature (Stevenson, 1954; Provence and Ritvo, 196 1 ; Provence and Lipton, 1962; Schaffer and Emerson, 1964; Coppolillo, 1967; Greenacre, 1969; Fintzy, 1971), with a few experimental studies (Weisberg and Russell, 1971; Gershaw and Schwarz, 1971). Tolpin (1971) hypothesized that a “transitional object” aids the child in the separation-individuation process, and Busch et al. (1 973) rigorously defined and described the “primary transitional object.” Most recently, Passman and Weisberg (1 975) reported that mother and blanket share similar functional properties in reducing fearfulness and generating exploratory behavior of the children in an experimental setting. Most of the observations reported in the literature have been limited to Western culture, as seen in England and the U.S.A., and were primarily concerned with the characteristics and functions of the transitional object. Little is known concerning the rates at which infants develop attachment behavior toward inanimate objects and how this behavior

Do 5-month-old infants see humans as material objects?

Infants expect objects to be solid and cohesive, and to move on continuous paths through space. In this study, we examine whether infants understand that human beings are material objects, subject to these same principles. We report that 5-month-old infants apply the constraint of continuous motion to inanimate blocks, but not to people. This suggests that young infants have two separate modes ...

Five-month-old infants know humans are solid, like inanimate objects.

Infants know that humans are exempt from some of the principles that govern the motion of inanimate objects: for instance, humans can be caused to move without being struck. In the current study, we report that infants nevertheless do apply some of the same principles to both humans and objects, where appropriate. Five-month-old infants expect humans, like all material objects, to be solid.

Attachment to inanimate objects and early childcare: A twin study

Extensive non-maternal childcare plays an important role in children's development. This study examined a potential coping mechanism for dealing with daily separation from caregivers involved in childcare experience - children's development of attachments toward inanimate objects. We employed the twin design to estimate relative environmental and genetic contributions to the presence of object ...

Discrimination of animate and inanimate motion in 9-month-old infants: An ERP study

Simple geometric shapes moving in a self-propelled manner, and violating Newtonian laws of motion by acting against gravitational forces tend to induce a judgement that an object is animate. Objects that change their motion only due to external causes are more likely judged as inanimate. How the developing brain is employed in the perception of animacy in early ontogeny is currently unknown. Th...
